The 2009 season marks the 27th Anniversary of Eastern League Baseball in New Britain. There is a rich history of baseball in the Hardware City and the Rock Cats are the Nutmeg State’s oldest, continuously operating professional sports franchise. From Cy Young Award winners to Most Valuable Players and Batting Champions to Rookie of the Year Award winners and All-Stars, New Britain has been an enormously productive foundation for Major League Baseball. Over four million fans have seen professional baseball in New Britain throughout the years.

In 1983, former owner Joe Buzas moved the club from nearby Bristol to its current location at the Willow Brook Park Sports Complex. The New Britain Red Sox had many notable alumni including Major League Most Valuable Players 3B Jeff Bagwell and 1B Mo Vaughn. MLB All-Stars OF Brady Anderson, OF Ellis Burks, RHP Aaron Sele, SS John Valentin and P and Curt Schilling also played in New Britain as did Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens. Both Bagwell and Schilling played their final years in the Red Sox minor league system in New Britain before being traded.
